Kyle Johnston enters his first season as an assistant coach for North Carolina men’s soccer in 2023.
Johnston arrives in Chapel Hill following a three-year stint at the College of Charleston where he served as an assistant coach and director of goalkeeping. In 2021, he guided the Cougars’ starting goalkeeper to All-Colonial Athletic Association honors and two CAA Defensive Player of the Week awards.
In addition to his role at CofC, Johnston was also the director of goalkeeping for South Carolina Surf Soccer Club.
Prior to his time in Charleston, Johnston worked at Sewanee: University of the South – his alma mater – in the same capacity. The Tigers experienced their best season in program history with Johnston on staff. He was part of the Southern Athletic Association Coaching Staff of the Year and coached the team’s goalkeeper to all-conference praise.
Johnston, who had a standout playing career of his own at Sewanee from 2015-18, garnered United Soccer Coaches Association All-South Atlantic Region Third Team accolades as a senior. The two-time team captain was tabbed an all-conference performer each season.
Following his collegiate career, Johnston played in the USL for Carolina Dynamo and Houston FC.
Johnston earned his bachelor’s degree in international and global studies from Sewanee in 2019. Additionally, he holds United Soccer Goalkeeping Level I and II diplomas, a U.S. Soccer D license and an ISSPF professional certificate in goalkeeping coaching science.
A native of Sewanee, Tennessee, Johnston now resides in Chapel Hill with his wife, Natalie.
