Marco Genée joined the North Carolina men's soccer program as Director of Operations in 2022. Genée brings a unique combination of coaching experience, international playing background, and academic leadership to the program.
Before joining the staff in Chapel Hill, Genée coached with Triangle United Soccer Association and the Olympic Development Program. He has held multiple coaching roles at both the collegiate and club levels and brings several years of experience in international sales and marketing. He arrived at Carolina after working for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
Genée earned his Master’s in Physical Education from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, where he served as the graduate assistant coach for the men’s soccer team. During his tenure, the team achieved a remarkable 33-4-2 record, made two NCAA Division II Tournament appearances, and reached the Final Four. The team was inducted into the UNC Pembroke Hall of Fame in 2020 in recognition of its success.
In 2008, Genée completed his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Capella University.
A native of Verden, Germany, Genée was selected to join the Werder Bremen Development Academy. His playing career highlights include winning the 3rd German league with VfB Oldenburg and earning promotion to the 2. Bundesliga. As part of his graduate studies, he returned to intern with the SV Werder Bremen organization.
Genée is a member of the United Soccer Coaches Association and holds both the Advanced National License and the German Soccer Federation (DFB/UEFA) “A” Coaching License.
