- Title:
- Assistant Coach (Throws)
Andrew Dubs is entering his second year as an assistant coach for Carolina, now taking on the duties of Head Recruiting Coordinator and Director of Operations. He is responsible for all aspects of the team including: recruiting, budgeting, scheduling, team travel, compliance, and meet management.
In 2011-12, after one year at the helm coaching the throwers, the Tar Heels saw great improvements. The group had an outstanding year culminating in each thrower either having a PR or placing higher than seeded at the ACC Championships. Dubs coached seniors, Emory Parsons (discus, 176-5, 53.78 meters) and Kwabena Keene (shot put, 58-11 ½, 17.97 meters), to new lifetime bests and first team All-ACC honors by each placing third in their respective events. The throws group as a whole combined for: three ACC Scorers, two first team All-ACC Honors, and two NCAA qualifiers. The throws recruiting class was among the nation's elite in 2012, with the women's class consisting of No. 1-ranked U.S. hammer, weight throw, and shot put throwers, while also signing one of the top discus throwers on the men's side.
Dubs began his collegiate coaching career at Auburn University where he was working as a Volunteer Assistant Coach from 2010-11 for the Tigers under Head Coach Ralph Spry and throws coach Jerry Clayton. At Auburn, Dubs assisted Clayton with standout Auburn throwers Eric Werskey (NCAA shot put All-America), Stephen Saenz (NCAA shot put All-America and NCAA discus qualifier) and Marcus Popenfoose (NCAA qualifier in the shot put and discus). He also helped the Tigers with team administration in meet management, compliance, team travel and recruiting. While at Auburn, Dubs also earned his master's degree in Higher Education and Sport Management.
Prior to Auburn, Dubs coached at his High School alma mater, Council Rock South in Holland, Pa., during the 2009-2010 season. A former standout thrower for the University of Connecticut, Dubs was a three-time NCAA qualifier and four-time Big East Champion in the shot put for the Huskies. He was also an All-Big East Conference Selection eight times in the shot put and twice in the discus.
Dubs, a native of Holland, Pa., earned a bachelor's in Kinesiology: Coaching and Administration from UConn in 2009. During his time with the Huskies, Dubs served in a year-long coaching internship under Head Coach Greg Roy. He worked with team travel, budgeting, equipment and was President of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
