February 28, 2018 | Women's Basketball
GREENSBORO, North Carolina - North Carolina forward Janelle Bailey has been voted Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Year, announced Wednesday by Commissioner John Swofford. Bailey is the tenth Tar Heel to win the award, and the fourth in the last six seasons.
Bailey, the 2017 USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year, was named ACC Rookie of the Week an astonishing seven times during the season, including once in November, and twice each in December, January and February.
A native of Matthews, North Carolina, Bailey earned ACC All-Freshman team honors on Tuesday. She led all ACC rookies in both scoring and rebounding with 15.4 points and 9.1 boards per game. She had perhaps her finest game of the season with 30 points and 19 rebounds in an overtime victory at Wake Forest on Jan. 14.
Her 19 rebounds were the most by a Tar Heel player since Jessica Breland had 23 against Duke on Feb. 9, 2009 and tied Eryka Davenport of Miami for the most in the ACC during the 2017-18 season.
Bailey was at her best against ACC foes, averaging a double-double with 15.8 points and 10.1 caroms. Her 12 double-doubles rank fourth overall in the league.
Bailey joins a prestigious list of Carolina standouts that have earned the ACC Freshman of the Year award: Dawn Royster (1984), Charlotte Smith (1992), Chanel Wright (1996), Nikki Teasley (1998), La'Tangela Atkinson (2003), Camille Little (2004), Xylina McDaniel (2013), Diamond DeShields (2014) and Stephanie Watts (2016).Â
Carolina (14-15) is the 12th seed in the ACC Tournament and will take on 13th seed Boston College Wednesday at 1 p.m. from the Greensboro Coliseum.
