2020– William Blumberg: Men’s Tennis (Greenwich, Conn.)
Became the first 10-time All-America in Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) history. Won the Patterson Medal in 2020 then returned for a fifth year of eligibility due to Covid-19. Earned All-America honors in both singles and doubles in each season from 2017-21. Earned first-team All-ACC honors in 2017-19 and 2021 (no teams were selected in 2020 due to the pandemic).
As a freshman in 2017 he became the first Tar Heel ever to reach the NCAA singles championship match, finishing second with a season record of 31-3 and a final ranking of No. 6. In doubles, he and Robert Kelly reached the NCAA quarterfinals and finished the year ranked No. 4. He was the ITA’s National Freshman of the Year, ACC Rookie of the Year and the Most Valuable Player in the NCAA Tournament. Blumberg also won the ITA Men’s All-America singles title and was second in doubles.
Was the ACC Player of the Year in 2018, with season-ending rankings of No. 2 in singles and No. 3 in doubles. As a junior, he became the first Tar Heel to reach the NCAA singles quarterfinals three times.
He was the ITA’s Senior Player of the Year in 2020. In 2021, he reached the NCAA quarterfinals in singles for a fourth time in a row and teamed with Brian Cernoch to reach the doubles quarterfinals.
In five seasons as a Tar Heel, he went 92-18 in singles and 93-24 in doubles. He led Carolina to a 108-23 record as the Tar Heels made two NCAA semifinals and played in one NCAA championship match as a team.
Blumberg was a three-time captain and won the 2019-20 Mildred McCaskill Award for outstanding academics, athletics and community outreach at UNC.
