Tar Heel Volleyball Sweeps Blue Devils

Chapel Hill, N.C. - UNC swept arch-rival Duke 3-0 (15-8, 15-5, 15-8) in front of 943 fans Friday at Carmichael Auditorium. The win extended the Tar Heel winning streak to nine and was the eleventh in the last 12 matches.
Shannon Smith led Carolina with 17 kills on 27 attempts with only two errors for a percentage of .556. Tori Seibert was second in kills with 12, hit .429, and also added six blocks. Asa Gustavsson tallied a double-double with ten kills and 11 digs in only two games. She also was the second UNC player to hit over .500, as she made only one error on 17 attempts for a percentage of .529. Freshman Eve Rackham recorded 49 assists for the Tar Heels and Liz Feldman led in digs with 14.
Carolina jumped out early on Duke in game one, taking a 7-0 lead. The Devils tried to rally, but could only pull to within five at 10-5. The Heels put the game away from there, 15-8.
Game two was back and forth early, with many sideouts and few points. When the points did start to come, it was UNC that took advantage. Carolina established a 10-3 lead and never looked back for a 15-5 victory.
Duke opened the third game on a 5-1 run, however the Tar Heels scored ten unanswered points for an 11-5 lead. Carolina then closed out the match 15-8 and improved their record to 11-3, 3-0 in the ACC. Duke fell to 5-7, 1-3 in the ACC. UNC had 60 kills in the match and hit .288 compared to Duke's 38 kills and .100 hitting percentage.
Duke was led by Ashley Harris with four kills and Josie Weyman who tallied six digs. Three other Duke players had three kills.
The 943 fans in attendance well exceeded the goal of 600 set by Wachovia during their Challenge Match, during which, mouse pads were given away to the first 200 fans who entered the match.
