CHAPEL HILL --- University of North Carolina men's basketball student-athletes Ed Cota and Terrence Newby have been indefinitely suspended from the team after an alleged incident that took place early Monday morning in which a number of people were involved in a fight.
Cota and Newby turned themselves in to campus police Monday afternoon after warrants were issued for their arrest on three counts of assault inflicting serious injury and two counts of simple assault. All the charges are misdemeanors. UNC Police are continuing their investigation.
Details concerning the alleged incident and Cota and Newby's alleged participation may be found by contacting UNC Police Major Jeff McCracken.
"Both Ed and Terrence strenuously deny their physical involvement other than that they were there and they tried to intervene when others started fighting, but we have no choice other than to suspend them indefinitely from all team activities," says head coach Bill Guthridge.
"The situation apparently was a carryover from the Franklin Street Halloween celebration. Our players are instructed to walk away from any altercation. It's tough to do when your friends are involved, but you must. I believe their version of the story, but we have to let the judicial process run its course. Ed and Terrence tell me they are being singled out because they are recognizable as basketball players. We will have wait and to see."
