Stevenson & Trimble Excel As Tar Heels Tame Panthers, 79-65
February 14, 2026 | Men's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Jarin Stevenson and Seth Trimble led the way as No. 11 North Carolina overcame two missing starters and dominated Pittsburgh, 79-65, on Saturday afternoon in the Smith Center.
Stevenson scored a season-high 19 points on 6 of 7 shooting, including 3 of 4 three-pointers, leading Carolina in scoring for the second game in a row. Trimble also scored 19, hitting 9 of 11 free throws after drawing eight fouls during the game.
The Tar Heels played their first game without star freshman forward Caleb Wilson, who broke a bone in his left hand in the loss at Miami on Tuesday night. Carolina also was without center Henri Veesaar, who missed his first game of the year.
Zayden High and Luka Bogavac slotted into the starting lineup in their place and both picked up the slack. In his first career start, High tallied in points (15), field goals (seven), rebounds (seven) and minutes (32) and tied his career high in assists (two).
Bogavac drilled his first four shot attempts, finished with 15 points and scored in double figures for the fifth time in seven games. Derek Dixon scored just three points on a three-point bank shot but had a season-high seven rebounds and tied his season assist high with seven.
"Coach [Davis] always talks about, you may not know when your number will be called, but it's going to be called at this point of the season," Trimble said of his teammates stepping up when needed. "Zayden tonight, he was incredible — played 32 minutes and didn't look too tired to me. I mean, Jarin was incredible. Luka was great. Everybody was really, really good. It was very much well-rounded basketball."
Cameron Corhen scored 17 first-half points but only six in the second, finishing with a game-high 23 for the Panthers.
The Tar Heels rebounded from Tuesday's loss at Miami and improved to 20-5 overall this season, 8-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference with the victory. Pitt lost its fifth in a row and its eighth in nine outings, falling to 9-17, 2-11. It was UNC's fourth win over the Panthers in the last five meetings in the series.
Carolina won its 20th game of 2025-26 for its 66th 20-win season and its 56th in 73 seasons as a member of the ACC.
"They just executed," head coach Hubert Davis said of his team's effort. "I said tonight was a was a clear example what Carolina basketball is about than any other time where you had two teammates out and for them to react and respond this way."
UNC started the game hot, shooting 53.3 percent in the first half before cooling off in the second. The Tar Heels forced 12 Pitt turnovers while committing only four, and thrived with a quick pace, outscoring the Panthers, 16-4, in fast break points.
Carolina started with a bang, hitting its first eight shots to build a double-digit lead in the opening six minutes. Four points from Stevenson in the final seconds before halftime gave the Tar Heels their biggest lead to that point at the break, 46-32 despite missing eight of their last nine shots.
In the second half, the Tar Heels stretched their lead to as many as 22 points with under eight minutes to play.
Pitt never led, and the only time the game was tied was at 0-0.
"Congrats to North Carolina," Pitt head coach Jeff Capel said. "They played really well tonight. They were going through some adversity. Their two leading scorers out, a guy stepped up and played really well for them. Zayden High had a career high, was really good, and [Seth] Trimble was very good. I don't know how to pronounce [Bogavac's] name, but he got off to a great start and played well."
