CHAPEL HILL --- University of North Carolina safety David Bomar has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference's Defensive Back of the Week for his performance in Carolina's 10-6 win over NC State last Thursday.
omar had a career-high 19 tackles against the Wolfpack. He assisted cornerback Errol Hood on the game-saving tackle of State wide receiver Chris Coleman at the one-foot line. Coleman was attempting to score on a fourth-and-goal play from the 8-yard line with less than 90 seconds to play. Hood made the initial tackle, but Bomar came in to keep Coleman from stretching the ball over the goalline for the touchdown.
omar was making his third start in as many games. The Durham, N.C., native has made 47 tackles in those three contests, an average of 15.7 tackles per game. That easily leads the team in that span of games.
For the year, Bomar has 57 tackles and is Carolina's fifth-leading tackler. The former Northern High School standout earned a scholarship prior to the start of the 1999 season. His father, Gayle, played quarterback at UNC and was team captain in the late 1960s. His brother, J.P., plays on special teams for UNC.
