Wonderful success story. Local kid whose dad captained the Tar Heels in the late 1960s, walked on as a freshman and has since earned a scholarship and a spot in the starting lineup. Made the coaches take notice of his work ethic and big-hitting capabilities on special teams his first two seasons. Took over as starting strong safety late last year after Quinton Savage was injured. Responded by averaging better than 14 tackles a game in his four starts. A smart player who is very physical. Coach Ron Case says he is tenacious, has a great work rate and is a big hitter.
1999 -- Junior Season
Earned a scholarship prior to the season. Named by UNC coaches as the Most Improved Defensive Player. Late in the year, he emerged as a big-play strong safety. Started the last four games – including wins over NC State and Duke – and averaged 14.3 tackles in those contests. Was named the National Defensive Player of the Week by the Charlotte Touchdown Club for his efforts in the 10-6 win over the Wolfpack. Made 19 tackles (eight solo), including the game-winning stop at the one-foot line. Tackled NC State receiver Chris Coleman inside the 1-yard line with 1:28 to play on the Pack’s final offensive play of the game. Also earned ACC Defensive Back-of-the-Week honors for his performance that week. Made his first start against Furman and had 12 tackles, including one for a loss. Made 16 stops against Wake Forest, 19 versus NC State and 10 in the finale against Duke. Made his first collegiate interception against Duke and returned it 18 yards to set up a UNC field goal. Finished the season with 67 tackles, fifth most on the team. Saw action on 376 snaps, an average of 34 plays per contest.
1997 and 1998 Seasons
Recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for a touchdown in Carolina’s 20-13 win over San Diego State in the Las Vegas Bowl. Played in all 12 games in 1998. Saw action on 189 snaps. Made eight solo tackles and assisted on two other stops. Had three primary tackles against Stanford and three against Pittsburgh. In 1997, he was in on 85 plays in 10 regular-season games.
Northern Durham High School
Played three years of football, two years of baseball and did the long jump for a year. Two-time honorable mention all-conference selection. Had his best game against No. 1-ranked West Charlotte as he made eight solo tackles. Co-captained the football team for Coach Gary Merrill. Member of the National Honor Society.
