CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- Beth Sheppard began the night for the North Carolina women's soccer team with a career-high two goals in the first ten minutes of Thursday night's ACC Tournament quarterfinal game between the top seed Tar Heels and the 8th seed Florida State Seminoles. The Tar Heels did not surrender attack after Sheppard's two quick goals as they outshot the Seminoles 20 to 3 en route to a 4-0 victory at Fetzer Field.
Senior Beth Sheppard began her performance with a goal at the 5:18 mark off a cross from sophomore Anne Remy. Sheppard scored her second goal from 12 yards out four minutes later at the 9:26 mark from a similar crossing play, this time from junior Raven McDonald. The Tar Heels finished their first half scoring binge at the 12:59 mark as Kalli Kamholz ricocheted a shot off both the left and right posts before the ball trickled into the net. Kamholz was assisted on the play by McDonald and Jena Kluegel. The final goal of the evening came in the second half as Tar Heel freshman reserve Elizabeth Ball scored from 15 yards out past the oncoming Seminole reserve keeper Sarah Crawford. Ball's goal was assisted by Remy and McDonald.
McDonald's three assists in the game tied the record for the most assists in one game for a women's ACC Tournament contest.
North Carolina will play Friday night against the winner of the final game of the evening between the 4th seed Clemson Tigers and the 5th seed Virginia Cavaliers.

North Carolina Head Coach Anson Dorrance:
We're excited about advancing and being able to play our roster. In an event like this when it's critical to advance, it's certainly an advantage to try and rest legs. That was our goal coming in to the game and we were able to do that.
Our starting unit, I thought, played very well and put us in a great position early and allowed us to play our reserves. I thought the first half play of our reserves wasn't up to standard. But I thought the starting unit and the reserves had a tremendous second half.
We're very pleased to be in the semifinals.
North Carolina Student-Athletes:
Beth Sheppard: We as a group of seniors go out and give everything, not only for ourselves, but for our team.
(concerning UNC injuries) Everybody's pulling together and playing for each other. If somebody goes down, we have people who can step into whatever role on the field. I think we're talented enough and have a big enough heart to come through these things.
Florida State Head Coach Patrick Baker:
We were pleased with our effort, having lost to them 9-0 earlier in September.
We did worry that being a young team, we might not be able to step out and play, but I thought outside the first 15 minutes we played pretty well.
Maryland Tops Duke, 2-1, in ACC Tournament Quarterfinal Action
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- Duke got off twice as many shots as Maryland, but the Terps doubled the Blue Devils in goals, advancing to the ACC Tournament semifinals with a 2-1 victory over Duke in quarterfinal action on Thursday afternoon. The win gives Maryland, seeded second in championship a 10-8-1 overall record, while the seventh-seeded Blue Devils fall to 12-9-0 overall.
Maryland got on the board first, scoring a goal on their first shot of the game, at the 23:27 mark. The Terps' Sara Gustafson took a Terri Greer shot which bounced off a Duke defender and put it beyond the reach of Duke goalkeeper Isis Dallis. It marked Gustafson's fourth goal of the season, three of which have come against Duke.
The tempo of the game slowed for the remainder of the half, as Duke finished with six shots in the first period, but were unable to convert any to goals. Maryland finished with just the one shot in the first 45 minutes.
The second half had a little more action, as Duke tied it up with a goal seven minutes into the period. Sherrill Kester took her own rebound off a Duke defender and fired it in from 10 yards out. It was the fourteenth goal of the season for Kester, who is Duke's leading scorer.
Maryland broke the tie in the 77th minute, scoring a goal following a scramble in front of the Duke goal. The Terps' Lindsay Basalyga and Dana Jarzyniecki positioned the ball into the box, but Dallis attempted to fall on the ball for a stop. As the ball popped away from Dallis, Maryland's Jackie Mynarski was in position to connect with the net for the Terps' game-winning score.
The Terrapins advance to play Wake Forest, a 4-0 winner over N.C. State in Thursday's first quarterfinal at 6:00 p.m. Friday at UNC's Fetzer Field.

Duke Head Coach Bill Hempen:
We're very disappointed that we didn't come out victorious. We had a good end of the season and we went into this tournament very positive.
You've got to applaud Maryland and the effort they put in, and the way they found a way to win. I'm proud of our kids too. It just wasn't enough to beat Maryland.
Duke Student-Athletes:
Isis Dallis: (on Maryland's 2nd goal) The ball came across the box and I saw their two offensive players coming toward it. I tried to smother it but it came off my hands and they were in a position to put it away.
Sherrill Kester: The chances they got, they put in. We got a couple of chances that we didn't put in. It's pretty frustrating.
Maryland Coach Shannon Higgins Cirovski:
Obviously we're pleased with our performance in this game. A great opponent like Duke is something we're going to need in the tail end of the season going into the NCAA tournament.
In goal we did well and the quality of our shots was better.
Wake will be gunning for us because of the loss they had to us earlier.
Maryland Student-Athletes:
Jackie Mynarski: I've been waiting four years to have the responsibility as a player and to come through for our team. It's an awesome feeling.
WAKE FOREST DEFEATS N.C. STATE IN ACC TOURNAMENT OPENER
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- In a match primarily controlled by Wake Forest, the Demon Deacons used an early goal to jump out on top of the N.C. State Wolfpack and then played solid defense to take a 4-0 opening-round win Thursday in the 1999 ACC Tournament.
Wake's opening goal came just 59 seconds into the match when Joline Charlton received a through pass from Emily Taggart and put the shot home past State goalie Jessica Glazer.
Charlton scored Wake Forest's second goal at the 29:28 mark as she pick up a loose ball, moved left to the middle and scored from the top of the box as Glazer made a diving attempt. N.C. State's best scoring opportunity came at the 41:30 mark as Larua Scott took an open shot >from the top of the box that Wake goalie Erin Regan pulled in.
The second half of the match was similar to to the first as Wake Forest was able to put away a early goal. At the 47:23 mark, Stacy Roeck headed in a direct kick from Anne Sropshire on the left side of the box. Wake then finished the scoring when Katie Johnson took a long through ball from Sarah Kate Noftsinger at the edge of the midfield circle, took it to the top of the box and then buried the shot past State's charging keeper.
Wake Forest will now play the winner of today's Duke-Maryland match tomorrow at 6:00 p.m.

NC State Coach Laura Kerrigan:
I thought the flow of play was fairly even. The shots were pretty even. They just finished their opportunities and we didn't.
We showed a lot of improvement over the season. Wewere in every game which is encouraging.
Wake Forest Head Coach Tony daLuz
I'm just relieved the first game is over with. I knew NC State would come out and try to pressure us high and I thought we dealt with it pretty well.
Getting the early goal was huge for us. It put them under pressure right away. Being 2-0 at halftime, I thought we were in a pretty good position.
With the early lead, we got to rest a lot of key players. We have to do that to get through this tournament.
Wake Forest Student-Athletes
Joline Charlton: The first goal was a big relief. It was a little pressure taken off. It was a big opportunity, a wide open goal. I just put it away.
CLEMSON DOWNS VIRGINIA 3-1 AS TOP FOUR SEEDS ADVANCE IN 1999 ACC WOMEN'S SOCCER TOURNAMENT
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Despite being outshot 12-7, the opportunistic Clemson Tigers defeated the Virginia Cavaliers 3-1 in the final quarterfinal game of the 1999 ACC Women's Soccer Tournament at Fetzer Field Thursday night.
The fourth-seeded Tigers advance to Friday night's semifinals at 8 p.m. where they will face top- seeded North Carolina, a 4-0 winner over Florida State in Thursday night's first game. Second-seeeded Maryland and third-seeded Wake Forest will meet at 6 p.m. Friday night after advancing with wins Thursday. All top four seeds advanced in Thursday's play.
Clemson struck first when Beth Keller took a pass from Alison Burpee and went a third of the field to score past Virginia goalkeeper Julie Harris at the 33:58 mark.
Neither team scratched again until there were less than 20 minutes remaining on the clock. At the 70:34 mark, Keller crossed a ball to Tricia Williams at the right post who knocked it past Harris for a 2-0 Clemson lead. But just over five minutes later Virginia retaliated on a goal by Jill Maxwell, who headed in Ashley Meeker's free kick at the 75:45 mark.
But with Virginia pressing for the tying goal Clemson capitalized on the overextended Wahoo defense to score with just 4:36 remaining. Deliah Arrington took a shot that hit the right post but Burpee was there to pounce on the rebound and score into an empty net.
Virginia fell to 12-8 on the season with the loss. The Cavaliers have been eliminated from each of the past three ACC Tournaments by Clemson in quarterfinal games in 1997 and 1999 and in the semifinals in 1998. Clemson improved to 13-5-1. The Tigers will meet 10-time defending champion North Carolina Friday for the fourth successive year in ACC Tournament play. UNC defeated the Tigers in the 1996 and 1998 final and in the 1997 semifinals.

Clemson Coach Tracey Leone Quotes:
I thought it was an exciting game for the fans to watch. I thought we were opportunistic and we were tough. Virginia was very good.
We weathered many storms in the second half. I thought our defense played very well and at the end of the stretch our goalkeeper made some big saves. They were putting us under a great amount of pressure the latter part of the second half and we did well to weather that. Virginia really was pretty awesome.
We were opportunistic in countering. We did some things we'd been doing in training like following up and shooting for the post, so that was really good to see. But Virginia was awesome.
UVA Coach April Heinrichs Quotes: I think it's a tough loss for us. I don't think we deserve to lose. Clemson's a good team, but I don't think our players deserve to lose.
It was a physical, fast paced game. It was a hard hitting, athletic game. But none the less, I thought we controlled the ball. Despite all our pressure, I thought we controlled the ball very well.
We had about three chances clearing off their line. We scored a goal and then we started to create more chances. And then against the flow they get a breakaway goal and the ball hits the post and bounces back to two of their players. Immediately following that we get a shot with the ball and a player on the five-yard line and we don't even get it on the face. It's just unlucky in that regard.
