COLLEGE PARK, Md.
- Two teams riding three-game winning streaks will face off when ninth-ranked North Carolina heads to Maryland on Thursday for the opening of Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Tar Heels (3-1) are coming off a 72-68 win over Arizona State on Saturday. Playing for the first time with forward Jennifer Thomas and center LaShonda Allen, the Tar Heels took control of the game with a 14-4 run in the second half.
Thomas and Allen missed the first three games of the season because they had not yet met team conditioning requirements.
"We talked to the people at UCLA after our game with them and they told us how much they hated to play Arizona State," said North Carolina coach Sylvia Hatchell, whose only loss this season was to the Bruins. "They said Arizona State never quit and told us how they stay after you the whole game. They're just a very good team, and they showed it today."
LaQuanda Barksdale scored 24 points to lead the Tar Heels.
Maryland (4-1) is off to its best start in three years. On Tuesday, the Terrapins got 21 points from both Tiffany Brown and Marche Strickland in their 95-60 win over Fairleigh Dickinson. The 95 points were the most Maryland has scored in a game in three years and the nine 3-pointers set a team record.
