CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - University of North Carolina head football coach Carl Torbush announced today senior Oscar Davenport will start at quarterback in the Tar Heels' final home game on Saturday against the University of Maryland.
Torbush also said cornerback Dre' Bly will participate in pregame ceremonies honoring this year's senior class. Bly is in his third year of athletic eligibility but may choose to enter his name in the 1999 NFL Draft.
Starting tight end Allen Mogridge became the latest Tar Heel to miss practice because of injury. Mogridge has started every game this fall at tight end. Late in Wednesday's practice, Mogridge twisted an ankle after making a reception. He did not participate in Thursday's drills. Backup tight end Dauntae' Finger is already out of action this week due to a concussion. Walk-on Bryan Griffin of Clinton will start at tight end if Mogridge can not play.
Torbush said injured defensive linemen Ebenezer Ekuban and Russell Davis are somewhere between "questionable" to "probable" for the game, which will kickoff at 12:10 p.m. Sophomore Stephon McQueen of Raleigh will start at defensive end should Ekuban not be able to play. Ekuban and tailback Rufus Brown (hamstring) saw limited repetitions in Thursday's practice.
