Second-Half Surge Leads Men's Basketball to Exhibition Win

CHAPEL HILL --- The University of North Carolina made 24 of 32 second half shots from the field to overcome a three-point halftime deficit and defeat the Aussie All-Stars in an an exhibition men's basketball game Sunday at the Smith Center.
Freshmen Kris Lang and Jason Capel combined to score 10 straight second-half points to spark the victory. Lang led five Tar Heels in double figures with 16 points. Lang was 7 for 10 from the floor. The Aussies led by as many as eight points in the first half and went to intermission with a 38-35 lead. In the second half, Carolina outscored the All-Stars, 55-33.
Center Brendan Haywood was 5 for 5 from the field and chipped in 14 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Ademola Okulaja (13 points), Vasco Evtimov (12) and Brian Bersticker (10) also were in double figure scoring. Evtimov added seven rebounds and four assists. Point guard Terrence Newby had 10 assists. Max Owens scored six points, but knocked in a big three-pointer to give Carolina an eight-point lead in its second-half surge. Michael Brooker had five points and four assists and led a second-half defensive effort that held the Aussies to just 13 of 36 shooting from the field (36.1 percent). For the game, Carolina shot 62.7 percent from the field (37 of 59). The Aussies made 41.2 percent of their shots (28 of 68), including 12 of 35 from three-point range (34.3 percent).
