PREGAME
If freshman Jason Capel cannot play today versus Duke, it would be the latest in a series of injuries to hit the Tar Heels in the ACC Tournament. The most famous would be: 1969 Dick Grubar tore a ligament in his knee in the opening moments of the championship game versus Duke. However, the Tar Heels did win the title, 85-74, behind Charlie Scott's 40 points. In 1977, Carolina defeated Virginia, 75-69, in the championship game although Tommy LaGarde was out with a knee injury and Walter Davis made only a token appearance because of a broken finger suffered in the semifinals. In 1980, Carolina was beaten in the semifinals by Duke, 75-61, but was playing without James Worthy, who'd broken his leg at midseason. In 1993, Carolina was beaten by Georgia Tech in the finals, 77-75, with Derrick Phelps on the sideline. He had been injured in the semifinals against Virginia.
