Clemson, S.C. - Clemson scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and held on to defeat North Carolina, 5-4, Monday night at Tiger Field. The win, Clemson's second in a row over the Tar Heels, improved the Tigers to 33-19 on the season, 12-7 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Carolina fell to 38-12, 11-9. UNC is now 3-8 on the road in conference games this season.
Kyle Snyder (7-3) took the loss for UNC despite tying his career high with 11 strike outs. Snyder allowed eight hits and five earned runs while walking three. Ryan Mottl (3-5) picked up his first win in almost two months, allowing three runs, two of which were earned, on seven hits in 6.0 innings.
Tyrell Godwin went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI for Carolina. Jarrett Shearin went 2-for-5 wiht a triple for the Heels. Khalil Greene went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and a two-run double for the Tigers.
Carolina grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Dan Moylan led off the game with a double to left-centerfield and scored two batters later on a single to right by Chris LaMarsh. The Tar Heels added a run on no hits in the fourth. Godwin led off with a walk and stole second. After Matt McCay reached on a two-base throwing error by Tiger shortstop Bradley LeCroy that sent Godwin to third, Jay Madeira was intentionally walked to load the bases. Ryan Blake then drew a bases-loaded walk to score Godwin. Moylan and Clay Hooper were retired to end the inning with the bases loaded, however.
Clemson tied the game in the fourth on a two-run double to right-center by Khalil Greene. The Tar Heels responded with a run in the top of the fifth to make the score 3-2. Shearin tripled to right-center and scored on a hard single to right by Godwin.
The Tigers retook the lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, driving Snyder from the game. Clemson scored its runs on a two-run homer by Greene and an RBI single by Brian Ellis. Snyder struck out three batters in the inning but Casey Stone, the third of his strikeout victims, reached on a strikeout-wild pitch and later scored on Ellis single.
Godwins solo homer to left-center in the eighth cut the lead to 5-4 but Carolina could get no closer.
Carolina and Clemson will play the final game of their three-game series Tuesday night at 7:15 p.m. at Tiger Field.
