DURHAM, N.C. - The University of North Carolina's top-ranked women's soccer team utilized six different goal scorers Friday night in defeating the San Francisco Lady Dons 6-0 in the first game of the Duke adidas Women's Soccer Classic at the Duke Soccer Stadium.
The Tar Heels improved to 7-0-0 on the season with the victory, while the Lady Dons fell to 1-6-0. The Lady Dons took the first shot of the game, a volley by Crystal David which flew high over the Tar Heel goal. UNC then took the last 26 shots of the game, scoring six times, while USF goalkeeper Amy Voiland played well, racking up eight saves.
UNC received a scare in the game when 1996 and 1997 National Player of the Year Cindy Parlow went down with an injury when she scored the game's third goal with 24:09 to play. However, x-rays were negative and Parlow has a sprained left ankle. She will likely miss UNC's game with Baylor on Sunday.
Carolina was led by junior midfielder Tiffany Roberts, who had one goal and two assists in the game. Both junior defender Lorrie Fair and junior midfielder Rebekah McDowell had three assists each for the Tar Heels. Other goal scorers were Meredith Florance, Lindsay Stoecker, Rakel Karvelsson and Charlotte Mitchell. Laurie Schwoy, sophomore Mandy Morrison and freshman Johanna Costa each had single assists for UNC.
North Carolina will play Baylor Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Duke adidas Women's Soccer Classic at Durham, N.C.
