Baseball Topples Wake Forest 11-1 at Boshamer

Chapel Hill, N.C.--Mike Bynum improved to 5-0 on the season as North Carolina defeated Wake Forest, 11-1, Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. With the win, Carolina improved to 19-2, 1-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Demon Deacons, who saw their eight-game winning streak ended, fell to 15-5, 3-1 ACC.
ynum (5-0) allowed one hit and one earned run in 7.1 innings while striking ou six to pick up the win. He allowed just one hit through six innings, a solo home run by Andrew Riepe in the second. The Demon Deacons looked to rally in the seventh, loading the bases on three straight singles with one out. Bynum escaped the inning without allowing a run when he got Ricky Mendez to ground into a double play to end the inning. With his strong effort Saturday, Bynum lowered his 1999 ERA to 1.70, tops among Tar Heel starting pitchers.
John Hendricks (4-3) took the loss for Wake Forest, allowing 13 hits and nine earned runs in 6.2 innings.
The 16-hit Tar Heel attack was led by Tyrell Godwin, who went 3-for-5 with with a triple, three RBI and two stolen bases. Chris LaMarsh, Ryan Earey and Matt McCay each drove in two runs for Carolina. Riepe went 2-for-4 for Wake.
After Riepe's home run gave Wake a 1-0 lead, the Tar Heels responded with two runs in the fourth on a solo homer by Chris LaMarsh, his second of the season, and an RBI groundout by Ryan Mathews that scored Godwin.
The Tar Heels added four runs in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead. Dan Moylan legged out a double to left center to lead off and set the tone for the inning. After Jarrett Shearin flied out, Clay Hooper followed with a single that sent Moylan to third. LaMarsh then walked to load the bases for Earey, who doubled down the leftfield line to score Moylan and Hooper. Godwin followed with a two-run single to center.
Carolina added three runs in the seventh with a two-out rally when Godwin drove in Earey with a triple to right-centerfield. McCay followed with a long-distance home run to left-center that cleared the netting behind the wall. UNC tacked on two runs in the eighth.
The Tar Heels and Demon Deacons will play the rubber match in their three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium.
