CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Junior offensive guard Joe Ellison of Winston-Salem, N.C., a starter the past three games for the University of North Carolina, will miss three to four games due to a fractured left fibula. The injury, which occurred in pregame warmups prior to the Clemson game on October 3rd, was detected in x-rays taken today. Initial test results on Sunday did not reveal the fracture.
Ellison has made six career starts at offensive guard. He tore knee ligaments in the Gator Bowl on Jan. 1, 1997, but was able to return in the fall and play 444 snaps at right guard. Offensive right tackle Bryan Jones will shift inside and start at right guard and Kareem Ellis will start at right tackle. Ellison is the sixth offensive starter to miss games this year. Tight end Alge Crumpler injured his knee in the spring and is out for the year. Wide receiver Jason Peace injured his knee in practice the week after the season opener and is out for the year. Quarterback Oscar Davenport sprained his left knee on the fourth play of the game in the first week and missed most of three games. Wide receiver L.C. Stevens sprained his knee against Stanford and was unable to play against Georgia Tech. Running back Ronnie Robinson suffered a concussion in the Stanford game and also did not play against the Yellow Jackets.
