The Miami Hurricanes used a four-run third inning and the strong right arm of Robbie Morrison to defeat the North Carolina Tar Heels 7-4 in the Atlantic I Regional Championship game at Mark Light Stadium in Coral Gables, Fla.
The Hurricanes advance to the College World Series for the fifth straight time under Head Coach Jim Morris.
The loss ends the successful 21-year career of Carolina's Mike Roberts. Roberts, UNC's all-time winningest baseball coach, compiled a 780-428-3 record in Chapel Hill. This year, in arguably his best coaching job to date, a lame-duck Roberts took a team picked for the second-division of the ACC to the brink of the College World Series.
"I'm very thankful for the opportunity to be a college coach at a great university," remarked Roberts after the game.
"If I never coach again, I've had a wonderful opportunity."
UNC took an early 1-0 lead into the second on a Tyrell Godwin home run, but Miami's big third inning gave the 'Canes a lead they would never lose. Miami used a walk, two singles and a two-run Pat Burrel home run to grab a 4-1 lead.
The Heels chipped into the lead with lead-off homers by Jarrett Shearin and Jay Madeira in the fourth and fifth innings. For the day, the Heels scored all their runs with lead-off home runs.
Miami manufactured another run in the fifth to go up 5-3, but another lead-off homer, this one the second in a row by Madeira to lead off the seventh, trimmed the lead to 5-4.
The Hurricanes responded with a two-run shot by Aubrey Huff in the seventh for a 7-4 lead, but the Heels still had a chance until the 6-0, 215 Morrison took the mound.
Carolina loaded the bases in the top of the eighth with one out on a Dan Moylan double, a Hurricane error and a Richie Grimsley walk. In came Morrison, down went the Heels. Morrison struck out Ryan Earey and Madeira to end the inning, then struck out the side in the top of the ninth.
Coach Mike Roberts' final team finishes the season at 42-23, while Jim Morris' Hurricanes are 50-10 and headed to Omaha.
