CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The knee injury to North Carolina women's basketball player Chanel Wright is not as serious as initially thought and the senior is now listed as questionable for Thursday's game at Maryland. A decision as to whether she is able to play will be made at game time. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m. at Cole Field House.
Wright suffered the injury, now classified as a mild sprain of the medial collateral ligament and a contusion to the left knee, at practice on Monday. The injury was re-evaluated on Wednesday by Dr. Tom Brickner, the team's physician. "The problem now appears to be more a bruise than a sprain," Brickner said. "She has responded well to treatment."
Wright, a senior from Baltimore, Md., is averaging 13.8 points and 5.6 rebounds, both third-best on the team. She is one of the team's regular starters and has led Carolina in scoring in seven games this season.
Following the game at Maryland, UNC (22-5, 9-4) hosts Virginia on Sunday in the team's final home game of the regular season. The game is at 1 p.m. and will be televised by ESPN2. Wright and the team's four other seniors will be honored in a Senior Day ceremony before tipoff.
