Tar Heel Gymnasts Take Fourth at EAGL Championships

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Carolina gymnast Brooke Wilson wanted to end the 1999 season the way she started it; with a first place finish in the all-around. Wilson did just that, taking first in the all-around at the EAGL Championships Saturday with a total of 39.325, it was her ninth all-around title this season.
Wilson's finish helped propel the North Carolina gymnastics team to a fourth place finish in their final team meet of the season. The Tar Heels finished with a final score of 194.675. North Carolina State took first at the championship meet with a team school record setting 196.050. Maryland and New Hampshire finished second and third with a 195.475 and a 194.800 respectively.
Wilson set a EAGL record and UNC record with her 9.95 first place balance beam finish. Senior Jen DeLuca finished her career with a bang ending in a fourth place tie on vault (9.825) with Wilson. Senior Shelley Austin finished third on the uneven bars with a 9.875 and junior Megan Piper earned fifth with a 9.85.
Senior Ashley Simpson added to the senior Tar Heels' success getting a personal best 9.775 on vault. Freshman Monica Middleton also had a personal best 38.775 finish in the all-around.
Several Carolina gymnasts also earned extra EAGL honors. DeLuca was named the EAGL Scholar Athlete of the Year, she has a 4.0 in Biology. Austin earned a place on the all-league team for bars and DeLuca earned all-league honors on vault. Rounding out the group was Wilson who earned all-league in the all-around.
Wilson and Middleton will head to the NCAA Regionals to compete in the all-around Sat., April 10 in Morgantown, WV.
