COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Nikki Teasley scored 19 points and LaQuanda arksdale keyed a second-half surge that helped No. 14 North Carolina pull away to a 78-63 victory over Maryland on Thursday night.
Yanick Clay had 10 points and eight rebounds for the Tar Heels (23-5, 10-4 Atlantic Coast Conference). Jackie Higgins scored 16 points and Barksdale 14 as North Carolina bounced back from a disappointing home loss to unranked North Carolina State.
Despite the victory, the Tar Heels are just 4-3 in their last seven games.
Kelly Gibson led Maryland (5-18, 2-11) with 15 points. The Terrapins have lost 10 of their last 12 games against the Tar Heels.
Maryland stayed close until North Carolina got a 3-pointer and a 10-foot jumper from Barksdale in a 13-4 run that made it 57-48 with 12 minutes left.
It was 57-50 before Teasley hit a jumper and Higgins added two straight baskets for a 13-point cushion with 8:41 remaining.
Teasley scored 12 points in the first half, including five in a late 7-0 run that put North Carolina up 40-37 at halftime.
The game started similarly to the first meeting between the teams, when the Tar Heels bolted to an 11-0 lead en route to an 87-58 blowout last month. This time, North Carolina led 12-2 and 15-4 before Maryland used a 16-5 run to draw even.
