Haywood Makes World University Games Team

CHAPEL HILL --- University of North Carolina rising junior Brendan Haywood has earned a roster spot on the 12-man United States Men's World University Games Team. Haywood, who averaged 12.0 points and 6.9 rebounds last year for the 24-10 Tar Heels, is one of two seven-footers on the team along with Texas center Chris Mihm.
The team was selected by the USA Basketball Men's Collegiate Committee after two sets of tryouts. The team is coached by Oliver Purnell, the head coach at the University of Dayton.
Joining Haywood on the team are St. John's guard Erick Barkley, Illinois guard Cory Bradford, Duke forward Chris Carrawell, Connecticut forward Kevin Freeman, Stanford forward Mark Madsen, Cincinnati forwards Kenyon Martin and Pete Mickeal, Mihm, Ohio State guards Sconnie Penn and Michael Redd and Gonzaga guard Matt Santangelo.
Team USA will train at the University of Dayton through June 28th then depart for Palma de Mallorca, Spain, site of the World University Games, on Tuesday.
The Games are July 3-12. The USA opens play against South Korea on the 3rd. The United States has won the gold medal in each of the last five World University Games.
Haywood shot 65.8 percent from the field last year, the third-highest figure in UNC history.
"It's a great honor for me to represent my country and it shows the hard work I've put in over the summer and the years past is paying off in a positive manner," said Haywood. "I'm hoping to get better experience and become a better all-around player on the this trip."
