Year-by-Year:
1900: W. A. Reynold's final team finished 4-1-3...
Following an opening win over the Deaf & Dumb Institute and a 0-0 tie with
Virginia Tech, Carolina topped current Southeastern Conference teams Tennessee,
Vanderbilt and Georgia, while recording a 0-0 tie against Sewanee in Atlanta.
Virginia, back on the schedule, once again owned Carolina, 17-0, at Norfolk.
The Nov. 29 Thanksgiving Day game was against Georgetown this year, and the
teams recorded the third 0-0 tie of the season.
(Thanksgiving fell on the last Thursday of November until 1941, when it was changed to
the fourth Thursday of the month.)...
When UNC won they did so in major fashion, outscoring the opposition 163-22 for the season...
Reynolds ended his four-year career with a sterling 27-7-4 (.763) record.
1901: Charles Jenkins became the new head coach and led UNC to a 7-2 record.
Seven straight shutout wins were followed by two disappointing losses...
The Heels had an amazing start defensively, outscoring their first seven opponents
182-0, an average score of 26-0. Included among the victims were Georgia, Auburn, and
N.C. A&M twice.
After Louis Graves' 90-yard kickoff
return for a touchdown keyed a 30-0 win in the
second matchup with N.C. A&M, the Heels traveled to Norfolk to face Virginia.
The Cavaliers shocked the Heels, 23-6, giving UVA a lifetime 8-2 advantage over UNC.
The season ended with a Thanksgiving Day game against Clemson in Charlotte, with
the Tigers taking a 22-10 win...
UNC beat all of its in-state opponents to win its
seventh state championship since 1892.
1902: H.B. Olcott began the first year of a two-year term as head coach. He was
the only coach between 1900-1909 to coach more than one season...
Carolina had another great start defensively, opening with four shutout wins before
a 0-0 tie against Virginia Tech at Roanoke, Va. A 17-10 win over VMI was followed
by a 0-0 tie against N.C. A&M. At this point in time Carolina had an 8-0-2 overall
record against their neighbors from Raleigh. The season ended with a 12-5 loss
to Georgetown and a 12-12 tie with Virginia...
G.R. Berkeley ran 80 yards for a touchdown in a 27-0 win over Davidson...
Four of UNC's nine games were played
in the state of Virginia.
1903: Olcott's second and final squad finished 6-3...
Carolina won its first four games (the first three by shutouts),
including a 17-0 win at Columbia, S.C. in the first
meeting between UNC and South Carolina. Georgetown ended the winning streak with
a 33-0 win in Norfolk, then Kentucky University beat UNC 6-5 in Greensboro. A win
over Clemson and a loss to Virginia Tech were followed by the biggest win of
the season, a 16-0 win over Virginia on Thanksgiving...
John Donnelly had a 75-yard TD run in a 45-0 win over Oak Ridge...For the second year in
a row, Carolina played four games in Virginia...Georgetown, a frequent opponent
between 1894-1915, had much success against the Heels, taking the alltime series 7-4-2.
1904: Robert Brown succeeded Olcott as head coach and guided UNC to a 5-2-2 record...
Carolina shut out its first six opponents on the way to a 5-0-1 start. The tie was a 0-0
game against Davidson in Charlotte. For the fourth straight year the Heels faded down
the stretch, this year losing 16-0 to Georgetown, tying N.C. A&M 6-6 and dropping
a 12-11 heartbreaker to Virginia...
The past four years UNC's defense was outstanding early. In 1901 UNC shut out its
first seven opponents, in 1902 its first five, in 1903 its first three and in 1904
its first six...The value of a field goal dropped from five points to
four this season.
1905: William Warner took over for Brown, and Carolina went 4-3-1...
Unlike the previous four seasons, UNC started slowly at 1-3, beating Davidson and
then losing consecutive games to Penn, Navy and Virginia Tech. Carolina turned things
around with a 36-0 win over Georgetown, before a 0-0 result against N.C. A&M gave the Heels
their third straight tie against A&M. The Tar Heels ended the season in style, shutting out
VMI 17-0 and Virginia 17-0...
L.F. Abernethy's 87-yard
TD run against VMI is the second longest scoring run in UNC's history...
Oddly, Carolina played no home games this season.
1906: Carolina went 1-4-2 in W.S. Keinholz' only year as the Tar Heels' head man...
UNC was 1-1-1 after its first three games, tying Davidson (0-0), losing to Penn (11-0) and
beating Richmond (12-0) for the season's only win in the lone game played in Chapel Hill.
Carolina lost three of its last four to
go with a 0-0 tie against Virginia Tech.
The season-ender this year was a 40-0
loss at Navy, the last time UNC would play the Naval Academy until 1946...
The Heels scored a meager 18 points in their seven games...
Carolina and Virginia did not play this year.
1907: Dr. Otis Lamson replaced Keinholz and guided UNC to a 4-4-1 mark...
Carolina started out 2-1-1, including a 14-0 win over William & Mary in the first
game between the two schools. Virginia topped the Heels 9-4 in a rare midseason game
between the two old rivals, with Clemson picking up a 15-6 win five days later.
Wins over Georgetown and Richmond were followed by a season-ending 20-6 loss
to Virginia Tech on Thanksgiving Day...
An early-season 0-0 tie against Washington & Lee was UNC's first appearance in
Newport News, Va.
1908: Edward Green's only squad had a symmetrical 3-3-3 record...
Carolina topped Wake Forest 17-0, then lost 12-0 at Tennessee before tying
Washington & Lee (0-0), Davidson (0-0) and Georgetown (6-6) in consecutive games in October.
UNC split its last four games, topping Richmond and South Carolina while losing to
Virginia Tech and Virginia...
Each Tar Heel win was followed by a loss.
1909: Green stepped aside and A. E. Bridges assumed head coaching responsibilities
for two seasons. Green's first team went 5-2 against an abbreviated schedule...
The Heels opened with an 18-0 win over Wake Forest, then won a tough 3-0 game
at Tennessee, moving Carolina to 4-1 lifetime against the Volunteers.
A 3-0 loss to VMI was followed by three wins and a 15-0 loss to Virginia Tech...
In a scoring oddity, all five Carolina victories were by shutouts, while
Carolina was shut out in its two losses...
The worth of a field goal depreciated once again this year, dropping to the
current three points.
Notable: Carolina had nine different coaches between 1900-1909...In 1901 letters
began to be awarded by the Athletic Association, whereas previously anyone who played had
letter. The Athletic Association also voted to restore relations with Virginia this year...
Carolina's coach in 1905, William Warner, was the brother of the famed "Pop" Warner...
The 1909 game against Virginia was cancelled due to the death of a Virginia halfback.
