Women's Basketball National Team Falls to Brazil, 77-72

WINNIPEG, Canada - Despite leading 47-34 at halftime, the U.S. could not hold on for the win and fell 77-72 to Brazil in Pan American Games play Monday. The U.S. gets a day off on Tuesday and will conclude preliminary play on Wednesday afternoon against host Canada. The top four teams in preliminary play advance to the medal semifinals on Aug. 5, and the U.S. has already assured itself of one of those spots. The gold and bronze medal games are scheduled for Aug. 7.
Against Brazil, the U.S. shot 51.3 percent in the first half but made just one of its first 13 second-half attempts. The Brazilians shot 62.9 percent in the second half, 48.4 for the game.
Six U.S. players scored at least nine points in a balanced effort. Edwina Brown led the way with 16, Michelle Marciniak scored 11 and Lynn Pride added 10. Former Tar Heel player Sylvia Crawley was one of three players who contributed nine points each. In 19 minutes of play off the bench, Crawley also added three rebounds and a block.
