CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Four Tar Heel walk-ons have been awarded athletic scholarships for their hard work and dedication to the Tar Heel football team, head coach Carl Torbush has announced. Seniors David Bomar, Jason Beamon and Louis Marchetti, as well as junior Anthony Perkins were each recognized.
Bomar, who played in all 12 games last year at safety and on special teams, highlighted his 1998 season in the Las Vegas Bowl when he recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown in the 20-13 victory. The former Northern Durham High School star is competing for the backup job at safety this year.
Beamon is a deep snapper from Walstonburg, N.C., who was named to the ACC Honor Roll last year. He is a history major who will likely see plenty of action as a snapper in 1999.
Marchetti, a Nashville, Tenn., native, played in six games in 1998 as a reserve at both offensive tackle and guard. He played a season-high 20 snaps against Maryland and 10 at Duke.
Perkins is a defensive tackle who worked his way into the two-deep last fall and played in each of the last nine regular-season games. The Holly Springs, N.C., native saw his most extensive action of the 1998 season against Florida State.
