Center Brendan Haywood will have minor corrective surgery on his left thumb on Tuesday as a result of a torn ligament. Haywood, a 7-0 junior from Greensboro, N.C., suffered the injury earlier this week in a pickup basketball game.
Athletic Trainer Marc Davis said, despite the surgery, Haywood should be ready to participate when the Tar Heels begin practice on October 16th.
Haywood started for Team USA this summer in the World University Games. He averaged 10.9 points and 6.3 rebounds per game for the U.S. Team, which won all eight games en route to the gold medal.
As a sophomore at UNC, Haywood was the second-leading scorer and rebounder and led Carolina in blocked shots and field goal shooting percentage. He averaged 12.0 points and 6.9 rebounds, blocked 60 shots and made 64.8 percent from the field. That mark equalled the third-best percentage in school history.
