DePriest And Godwin Earn Summer All-America Recognition

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - University of North Carolina baseball standouts Derrick DePriest and Tyrell Godwin have been named Summer All-Americas by Baseball America. DePriest, who shined in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League, was named to the first team, while Godwin earned second-team honors for his play on the United States National Team.
DePriest, a senior pitcher from Homestead, Fla., set a Cape Cod League record with 15 saves for the Chatham Athletics last summer. He also recorded a 0.00 ERA, was named to the CCBL East Division All-Star team and was presented the Russ Ford Award, given each August to the league?s top relief pitcher. Last year at Carolina, DePriest led the NCAA with a 1.71 ERA and was named Second-Team All-ACC.
Godwin, a junior outfielder from Council, N.C., started 34 of 37 games he played for the U.S. National Team over the summer of 1999. He hit .357 (46 for 129) with 10 doubles, one triple, four home runs and 22 runs batted in. He also stole nine bases in 13 attempts and had five outfield assists. A first-team All-ACC selection last year in Chapel Hill, Godwin led the 1999 Tar Heels in batting (.371), stolen bases (29) and triples (five) and shared the lead in base hits (82).
