Carmichael Auditorium Floor Commemorative Offering
January 18, 2000 | Men's Basketball
Jan. 18, 2000
Carmichael Auditorium, located in the heart of the University of North Carolina campus, is one of the most revered sporting venues in college basketball. On this Carmichael floor, many of the legends of Carolina men's and women's basketball etched their names in UNC history.
Now, for the first time, pieces of the original Carmichael floor are available for fans of all ages. The UNC athletic department and Jostens, Inc. have produced four beautiful plaques that every Carolina fan will want to own. The plaques are priced at $40, $85 and $200, plus shipping and handling, and are available by credit card beginning Thursday, October 1, 1998, by calling Midwest at 1-800-324-5996 (8 am to 5 pm, Monday - Friday, Central Standard Time).
From 1965-86, the Tar Heel men embarked on an unprecedented run of success in Atlantic Coast Conference basketball, and did so in one of the loudest, most intimidating arenas in the country. Led by head coach Dean Smith, who coached all 21 seasons in Carmichael, the Tar Heels posted a 169-20 record, a winning percentage of .894.
Larry Miller, Charlie Scott, Bobby Jones, Mitch Kupchak, Walter Davis, Phil Ford, Mike O'Koren, Al Wood, James Worthy, Sam Perkins, Michael Jordan, Brad Daugherty and Kenny Smith -- just a few of the incredible array of Carolina stars who graced the floor of Carmichael Auditorium.
Carolina won 13 Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season crowns, nine ACC Tournament championships, played in seven NCAA Final Fours, participated in the postseason 20 consecutive years, won the NIT in 1971 and won the NCAA championship in 1982. Carmichael Auditorium was a nearly impossible place for visiting teams to beat the Tar Heels. Carolina lost just 20 times in 21 seasons and never lost more than two games in a row at Carmichael!
What Tar Heel fan could ever forget some of the greatest moments in the program's history that took center stage at Carmichael. Bobby Lewis setting the single-game UNC scoring record with 49 points against Florida State, Walter Davis' 35-foot bank shot to send the 1974 Duke game into overtime to cap the famous rally from eight points down with just 17 seconds to play, Phil Ford's 34-point sendoff against the Blue Devils in his final Tar Heel home game, or Michael Jordan's thunderous dunk against Virginia as the Tar Heels rallied from 16 points behind.
Carmichael Auditorium has a rich tradition as home of the women's basketball program. Carmichael was home to Carolina's 1994 NCAA champion. Led by head coach Sylvia Hatchell, Final Four MVP Charlotte Smith, Tonya Sampson, Sylvia Crawley and Marion Jones, the Tar Heels shocked the world by winning the ACC's first women's basketball national championship. Carolina has won five ACC titles with Carmichael as its home court.
Carmichael has also been the home venue for the highly successful wrestling program. Led by Bill Lam, the Tar Heels won a dozen ACC crowns and had three NCAA champions -- three-time champion T.J. Jaworsky, C.D. Mock and Rob Koll. In addition to basketball and wrestling, Carmichael has been home to the UNC volleyball and gymnastics squads.
One of the most storied arenas in ACC history is now available for every fan's trophy case. Don't miss this incredible opportunity!
