GREENSBORO, N.C --- North Carolina junior center Brendan Haywood and Virginia junior guard Donald Hand have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Players of the Week after leading their respective teams to unbeaten records during this past week.
Haywood, a native of Greensboro, N.C., turned in a pair of solid performances, scoring 36 points last week in two Tar Heel wins. His top game was a 24-point outing in UNC's 75-63 win over 21st-ranked Maryland on Thursday. In that game, Haywood also grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots while hitting seven of his nine shots from the field and an impressive 10-of-11 from the free throw line. Against Georgia Tech, he picked up his third foul less than eight minutes into the game and was forced to the bench for the final 12:05 of the half. In the second period, however, Haywood scored 10 points, grabbed seven boards and blocked three shots. He helped limit Tech center Alvin Jones to 1 of 11 shooting from the floor. Carolina beat the Jackets, 70-53, in Atlanta.
Hand, a native of Paterson, N.J., scored a total of 60 points in the Cavaliers three wins last week, hitting on 18 of 39 shots for a 46.2 percent average from the field, while handing out 11 assists. His top game came in UVa's 86-81 win over Florida State, as he netted a season-high 28 points, including seven of eight free throws in the final two and a half minutes of the games to preserve the Cavalier win.
