CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior midfielder Mac Hammer scored an unassisted goal with exactly one minute to play Friday night to lift the Varsity Team to a 10-9 triumph over the Alumni at Frances E. Henry Stadium. It was the Varsity's first victory in the series since 1995 and broke a four-match losing streak to the Alumni.
Hammer's goal sparked a comeback in the game's final minutes for the Varsity as it thrice overcame two-goal deficits. The erased an early 3-1 disadvantage to go ahead 5-3 at the half. Twice the Varsity tied the game, first at 5-5 and then again ast 7-7. But both times the Alumni jumped back out to two-goal leads.
Sophomore midfielder Austin Garrison was the offensive hero for the Varsity as he figured in half of the goal total. Garrison scored three times and had two assists. Senior attackman Jeff Sonke also added a pair of goals to the Varsity effort.
Coach John Haus played his entire roster and gave play in the goal to all three keepers. Senior Rob D'Urso was particularly effective in the fourth quarter as he repeatedly staved off Alumni efforts to pull away in the game until the Varsity could rally on the offensive end.
