CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's women's soccer team spent most of Sunday afternoon's game on the attack en route to a 5-0 victory over Wake Forest in NCAA second round action. The victory avenged a 1-0 loss to the Deamon Deacons back on October 27 during the regular season.
UNC was led by two goals each by senior defender Kalli Kamholz and freshman striker Alyssa Ramsey. Junior midfielder Jena Kluegel played what UNC coach Anson Dorrance called "the game of her life" as she assisted on four of North Carolina's five goals. It was the first two-goal game of Kamholz's career and Kluegel matched her career high of four assists she had against Tennessee earlier this season.
Kalli Kamholz began the scoring barrage for UNC with a well-timed header off a Jena Kluegel corner kick at 15:06 in the first half. Exactly two minutes later at 17:06, freshman standout Alyssa Ramsey put back a rebound from a shot by Meredith Florence that was initially saved by Tracy Chao.
In the second half, Leslie Gaston put a goal past Wake Forest goaltender Tracy Chao after two beautiful touch passes in the box by Anne Remy and Jena Kluegel. That goal came at 49:53 in the match. Alyssa Ramsey added her second goal of the match at 82:45, redirecting a cross from Danielle Borgman just past the outstretched arms of Chao. Kluegel also assisted on that goal. Nearly three minutes later at 85:36, Kalli Kamholz concluded the Tar Heel assault, scoring her second goal of the match on a carbon copy of her first goal, heading in a corner kick from Jena Kluegel.
For the Deamon Deacons, Goaltender Tracy Chao had nine saves against the 25-shot Tar Heel attack. North Carolina outshot Wake Forest 25-4 on the way to improving its season record to 17-3. Wake Forest ends the season at 11-8-2 after advancing to the NCAA second round with a 6-1 win over Liberty this past Wednesday in the first round
The Tar Heels will host Virginia at 7 p.m. Saturday, November 18, at Fetzer field in third round competition. Earlier this season, Carolina defeated the Cavaliers 6-1 in Chapel Hill on September 1, 2000.
