Already this season, sophomore guard Coretta Brown has taken her game to a new level. In last Sunday's game at Syracuse, she established new career bests in scoring (23 points) and rebounds (nine) and flirted with a triple-double by adding nine assists. Tuesday evening as UNC beat North Carolina A&T 101-33, Brown not only added a new assists high to this season's list of accomplishments, she set a Carolina single-game record. Brown's 16 assists eclipsed the old record of15, set by Nikki Teasley against Georgia Tech on Jan. 24, 1999. She again came close to a triple-double, with 17 points and eight rebounds.
"I've been telling people all along that Coretta was a great player," UNC coach Sylvia Hatchell said. "Our unproven point guard has proven herself."
North Carolina won its home opener with ease, leading 63-6 at halftime. Senior forward LaQuanda Barksdale led the team with 21 points and senior guard Juana Brown scored 13 on 6-for-6 shooting. Freshman forward Chrystal Baptist came off the bench to score 10 points and grab 10 rebounds in just 11 minutes of play.
Malveata Johnson led North Carolina A&T with 22 points and nine rebounds. The Lady Aggies were 3-for-28 in the first half (10.7 percent) but hit 10-of-31 in the second.
" We wanted to use this game as a measurement of where we are at this point," said North Carolina A&T coach Karen Hall, whose team is 0-2. "In the second half, I thought we did a tremendous job of coming back and fighting and putting points on the board."
UNC is now 2-1 on the season and hosts Old Dominion on Saturday at 2 p.m. That game will played at the Dean Smith Center.
