Tar Heels Open Women's Basketball Season With Exhibition

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--
The 2000-01 edition of the University of North Carolina women's basketball team will kick off the season on Sunday with an exhibition game against Athletes in Action. Tipoff is 2 p.m. at Carmichael Auditorium and there is no charge for admission.UNC returns four starters and eight letterwinners from last year's team, which finished 20-13 and reached the NCAA Sweet 16. The Tar Heels are led by team captains LaQuanda Barksdale, Juana Brown and Leah Sharp, all seniors and returning starters. Barksdale and Brown are preseason candidates for the Naismith Player of the Year Award.
Joining the team are four freshmen: guard Joy Hairston, forward Chrystal Baptist and centers Carrie Davis and Candace Sutton. Carolina also has a new face on the bench in assistant coach Sylvia Crawley, a 1994 graduate and member of UNC's NCAA Championship team who joined the staff last summer.
