GREENSBORO, N.C. -- North Carolina's Brendan Haywood was tabbed as the ACC Player of the Week while Georgia Tech's Halston Lane was selected as the ACC Rookie of the Week in voting by a select panel of the Atlantic Coast Conference Sportswriters Association (ACSWA).
Haywood earned Player of the Week following his performances in two Tar Heel wins. Haywood, a 7-0, 268-pound senior from Greensboro, N.C., recorded the first triple-double in North Carolina history against Miami last Monday. Haywood scored on eight of nine field-goal attempts (.889) as he tallied 18 points, grabbed 14 boards and blocked a school-record 10 shots in a 67-45 win. Against Texas A&M, Haywood added 17 points, six rebounds and a block.
For the third straight week, a Georgia Tech player has been named Freshman of the Week as Halston Lane, a 6-4 guard from Oak Ridge, Tenn., garnered the award this week. For the week, Lane averaged 14 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 56 percent (10-of-18) from the field, including 5-of-9 from three-point range. Lane scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 86-84 win over Kentucky. In just 17 minutes of play, Lane hit nine of 13 attempts from the field, including four of seven from three-point range. Earlier in the week, Lane tallied five points and six rebounds in 13 minutes in Georgia Tech's loss to Georgia.
