Rod Broadway Hired as UNC Assistant Coach

Chapel Hill, N.C. ----- University of North Carolina football Head Coach John Bunting has hired former Tar Heel letterwinner Rod Broadway as the defensive line coach. Broadway, who is currently the defensive line coach for the University of Florida, will join the Tar Heel staff after the Nokia Sugar Bowl on Jan. 2.
"I am pleased to hire another former player with ties to the University of North Carolina," Bunting said. "Rod has a great track record as a coach and will be an asset to our staff. I'm thrilled to have people who once played in this program and who still care about this program, back in the program."
roadway has 22 years of coaching experience and has been a member of Steve Spurrier's Florida staff since 1995. He brings to Carolina the experience of coaching on both a national championship team in 1996 and on conference championships squads at Duke in 1989 and Florida in 1995, 1996 and 2000.
"I'm coming to back to North Carolina to continue its proud football tradition, win football games and bring my family back home," said Broadway. "I'm looking forward to the challenge. I think it's the greatest compliment in my profession to work at your alma mater. I look around down here at Florida and four of the full-time assistants are Florida graduates. I was always envious of them."
The 2001 Nokia Sugar Bowl vs. Miami will be Broadway's eighth bowl game as a coach, including six New Year's (Jan. 1 or Jan. 2) games. At Florida, he coached in the 1995 national championship game in the Fiesta Bowl vs. Nebraska and the 1996 national championship game in the Sugar Bowl vs. Florida State. He also was a member of the 1998 Citrus Bowl champion team that defeated Penn State and the 1999 Orange Bowl champion team that beat Syracuse.
In three of the last four seasons, the Gators rushing defense has ranked no lower than ninth in the nation (second in 1997, fourth in 1998 and ninth in 1999). The 1997 Gator defense established a school record by allowing just 70.7 rushing yards per game. Florida led the Southeastern Conference in sacks every year from 1996-99.
efore he joined the Gators, Broadway was the defensive line coach at Duke for 14 years from 1981-94. He began his coaching career as the nose guards coach at East Carolina from 1979-80.
A native of Oakboro, N.C., Broadway was a defensive tackle for the Tar Heels from 1974-77, earning first-team All-ACC honors in 1977. He helped lead Carolina to the 1974 Sun Bowl and the 1977 Liberty Bowl. Broadway is married to the former Dianne Bynum and he has a son Kenneth (15).
