Three Carolina players had double-doubles today. That is the first time UNC had three in one game since March 2, 1997, a win over Duke (Antawn Jamison 33 and 11, Serge Zwikker 14 and 10, Ed Cota 12 points and 11 assists). Today, Brendan Haywood had 20 points and 10 rebounds, jason Capel had 12 points and 13 boards and Cota had 10 points and 13 assists.
In the last six games, Carolina has outscored its opposition 266 to 177, an average margin of 14.8 points per second half. Carolina shot 65.4 percent from the floor today in the second half. In the last six contests, UNC has shot 97 for 178 from the floor, a percentage of .545.
This was Haywood's fifth double of the year and 14th of his career. This is the second double-double in a row for him, the second time this year he has consecutive double-doubles.
Haywood has 74 rebounds in the last eight games, an average of 9.3 per game.
It is the fifth 20-point game of his season and eight career. It is his first 20-point game since he had 24 against Maryland.
Brendan Haywood matched his career-highs for made field goals and assists for the second consecutive game. He was 9 for 12 from the floor and had 4 assists at NC State on Wednesday and was 9 for 10 from the floor and had 4 assists today against Wake Forest. He previously had made nine field goals in a game one other time (at Cal last year) and had four assists just one other time (Appalachian State last year).
Haywood is now shooting 132 for 180 from the floor this year, a percentage of .733. That is an alltime ACC single-season best and would be the second-highest percentage in NCAA single-season history. Steve Johnson of Oregon State shot 74.6 (235 for 315) in 1980-81.
Jason Capel recorded his fourth double-double, all coming this year (Buffalo 13 pts and 12 rebs, Miami 20 pts and 14 rebs, Maryland 11 pts and 12 rebs, Wake Forest 12 pts and 13 rebs).
Ed Cota posted his third double-double of the season (USC 15 pts and 10 asst, Michigan State 11 and 11, Wake Forest 10 pts and 13 assists). He has 13 career double-doubles.
Cota had 13 assists today, the eighth time this year he has posted double-figure assists and the 28th time in his career he has accomplished that feat. The previous Carolina record for double-figure assist games was 16 by Phil Ford.
Cota had 11 assists at NC State and 13 today. That is the first time this year he posted 10-plus assists in back-to-back contests. It is the eighth time in his career he has accomplished that feat.
Cota's assist-turnover ratio the last two games is 24 to 4 (11 and 1 at NC State and 13 and 3 today vs. Wake Forest). He has had more assists than turnovers in 23 of his 24 games this year. The only game he had more turnovers than assists was against NC State on Jan. 8 when he scored a career-high 23 points and had four assists and six miscues.
Cota now has 954 career assists. He moved past UNLV's Greg Anthony today and is sixth alltime in NCAA history. Anthony had 950. Cota needs just three assists to move into fifth place in NCAA history. Tony Miller of Marquette had 956. Syracuse's Sherman Douglas is fourth with 960.
Joseph Forte missed his first two three-point field goal attempts but hit six in a row and finished with 24 points today. That is the first time a UNC player has hit 6 three-pointers in a game since Shammond Williams had 6 in the NCAA Tournament second round win against UNC Charlotte on March 14, 1998.
Forte has scored 20 or more points five times this season. The 24 points are his second highest output of the year (27 at Virginia).
The 23-point margin of victory is Carolina's largest against ACC competition since a 78-49 win over Georgia Tech on March 5, 1999, in the ACC quarterfinals. It is the largest ACC regular-season win by UNC since a 98-64 win over Florida State on Feb. 7, 1999.
Carolina shot 53.4 percent from the floor today. That is the highest FG percentage in a game for UNC since it shot 58.6 in a loss at Virginia. It is the fifth time in the last eight games UNC has shot better than 50 from the floor.
Wake Forest shot 36.2 percent from the floor. That is the fifth time in the last six games UNC has held its opposition to 40 percent or under from the floor. (Duke shot 45.7 percent).
Jason Capel's assist-turnover ratio today of 5 to 1 was his best of the season and equalled the second-best of his career.
The 87 points were Carolina's highest output since UNC scored 91 in a 91-67 win at Buffalo on December 7, 1999.
