TAR HEELS FACE BRUINS IN LOS ANGELES
Carolina will look to build on its 6-0 start when it travels to the West Coast to face UCLA this weekend in a battle of Top 10 teams. Carolina is ranked No. 9 by Collegiate Baseball and No. 20 by Baseball America, while the Bruins are off to a 6-2 start and are ranked No. 2 by both polls. The Tar Heels are coming off a doubleheader sweep of Penn State last Sunday in Chapel Hill. Carolina won a lopsided 21-10 game in the opener and then rallied for a 3-2 win in 10 innings in the nightcap. Carolina and UCLA have met just one time prior to this weekend's series, as the Tar Heels defeated the Bruins 8-5 at the 1993 NCAA Central I Regional in College Station, Texas.
CAROLINA OFF TO ANOTHER HOT START
After sweeping the season-opening ACC/Disney Blast in Orlando and picking up home wins over Elon and Penn State last week, the Tar Heels are off to another fast start in 2000 at 6-0. Last year, Carolina started the season 16-0, setting the school record for longest winning streak.
CAROLINA CLOSES IN ON 2,000 WINS
The Carolina baseball program needs just five more victories to reach the 2,000-win plateau. Carolina, now in its 111th season, has posted a 1995-1191-36 (.625) all-time record and is coming off its most productive decade in history. The Heels won 379 games in the 1990s and posted four seasons with more than 40 victories.
FOX THREE AWAY FROM 50 WINS
Second-year head coach Mike Fox, a 1978 UNC graduate and former baseball letterwinner, has led the Tar Heels to a 47-18 record, including a school-best 22-2 start in 1999, since returning to his alma mater in May of 1998. With three wins in Carolina's next four outings, Fox would become the quickest Tar Heel skipper to reach the 50-win mark in history. Bill Fetzer, Carolina's head coach from 1921-25, led UNC to a 50-16-4 mark in his first 70 games at the helm. Fox has coached in 65 games thus far and is three wins shy of 50.
Fastest UNC Coaches to 50 Wins
Mike Fox 47-18 (65 games)
ill Fetzer 50-16-4 (70 games)
Walter Rabb 50-21-4 (75 games)
Mike Roberts 50-25 (75 games)
unn Hearn 50-27 (77 games)
Jim Ashmore 50-31-1 (82 games)
HOME RUN BARRAGE
While Carolina was held without a home run through the first 25 innings of the season until Ryan Blake hit an eighth-inning blast in the win over Miami, the Tar Heels' bats have been on fire since then. Against Elon, Dan Moylan, Clay Hooper and Tyrell Godwin each notched their first homers of the season, including back-to-back long balls by Hooper and Godwin in the sixth inning of that game. In Carolina's next outing against Penn State, Ryan Earey hit a grand slam and a solo homer en route to a career high seven RBI and Jay Madeira registered his first home run of the 2000 season in the 21-10 UNC victory.
DEPRIEST CLIMBS IN UNC RECORD BOOK
Derrick DePriest moved into third place in the Carolina record book for all-time appearances with 93 when he pitched 3.0 innings of relief and picked up the win over Penn State in the second game of last Sunday's doubleheader with the Nittany Lions. The senior right-hander, who last year led the nation with a 1.71 ERA, has appeared in four of Carolina's six games this year. He has allowed just two hits and one earned run and has struck out eight batters in 8.0 innings. DePriest needs just four more appearances to tie Brad Woodall for second place all-time at UNC with 97.

2. Brad Woodall (1988-91) 97
3. Derrick DePriest (1997-present) 93
4. Tim Kirk (1983-86) 92

TAR HEELS START SEASON WITH A BLAST
Carolina got off to a tremendous start to the 2000 season when it traveled to the ACC/Disney Baseball Blast in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., and came away with three straight wins over a strong field of non-conference opponents. The Tar Heels opened the three-day, season-opening tournament at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex with a come-from-behind 9-6 win over No. 23 Central Florida. On Saturday, UNC scored eight runs in the final two innings to erase a 2-0 deficit and defeat No. 14 Rice 8-2. Carolina capped the weekend with a 9-0 win over defending national champion Miami. The 9-0 shutout of the fifth-ranked Hurricanes was just the second time Miami had been held scoreless since 1975. Ryan Blake, Chris Elmore, Adam Greenberg and Dan Moylan were each named to the All-Tournament team.
FRESHMEN MAKE IMPRESSIVE DEBUT IN ORLANDO
Three true freshmen, Adam Greenberg, Russ Adams and Chad Prosser all saw considerable playing time in Carolina's season-opening tournament in Orlando, Fla. All three, as well as starting pitcher Eric Henderson, got off to tremendous starts to their respective Carolina careers. Greenberg started all three games in centerfield and was 6-for-12 at the plate with four RBI, four runs scored, a triple and three stolen bases in making the all-tournament team. Adams was Carolina's starting third baseman against Central Florida and Rice and he was 1-for-2, scoring twice in the 9-6 win over the Golden Knights. Prosser started two games at second and one at short and batted 3-for-9, including a 2-for-3 performance with one RBI and two runs scored against Central Florida. Meanwhile, Henderson earned the start against Rice and gave up just two runs on three hits in 6.1 innings in his debut.
BLAKE STELLAR AT DISNEY
Ryan Blake was one of several Tar Heels to have a standout performance in the ACC/Disney Blast. The versatile sophomore saw action at both DH and first base and was named to the all-tournament team after having an outstanding showing at the plate. He batted 5-for-10 over three games, including a two-run home run and a two-run triple. He also notched four RBI, four runs scored and two stolen bases. Blake came off the bench against Rice and broke a 2-2 tie in the ninth with a two-out, two-run triple that propelled UNC to the 8-2 win. He capped a 3-for-4 day against Miami by driving a two-run homer over the left field wall in Carolina's four-run eighth inning.
ELMORE CONTINUES WINNING WAYS IN FLORIDA
Chris Elmore continued his winning ways in Florida in guiding the Tar Heels to a 9-0 win over Miami. The senior left-hander pitched seven scoreless innings and gave up just four hits to up his career record to 11-2 while earning his first win of the season. His .846 winning percentage ranks second all-time at Carolina, and he has not lost a decision since April 19, 1997.
WINNING PERCENTAGE
1. Scott Bankhead, 24-3 (1982-84) .889
2. Chris Elmore, 11-2 (1997-present) .846
3. John Thoden, 20-4 (1987-89) .833
4. Paul Shuey, 18-4 (1990-92) .818
5. Mark Ochal, 21-5 (1980-81) .808
HEELS ENJOY CONTINUED SUCCESS AT HOME IN 2000
Carolina has won 40 consecutive non-conference home games, including three thus far in 2000. The last time the Tar Heels lost to a non-ACC opponent at Boshamer Stadium was Feb. 21, 1998, versus Seton Hall. Carolina posted one of its most productive seasons ever at home in 1999, winning 27 of 30 games for a .900 winning percentage.
