UNC Women Win Eighth-Consecutive ACC Indoor Track and Field Championship

Blacksburg, Va. - The UNC women's track and field team totaled five ACC champions and 11 All-ACC performers in Blacksburg, Va. on Friday and Saturday in route to 158 points and their eight-consecutive ACC indoor championship. The men's team, with two ACC Champions and five All-ACC performers totaled 89 points with a great finish by the 4x400m relay team (Handy, Ellis, Clinton, and Foster) to overtake N.C. State and secure second place. The Tar Heels trailed the Wolfpack by one point entering that last event, but the relay team earned third place and six points to pass N.C. State, who earned two points with its seventh-place finish. Clemson won the meet with 168 points.
Saturday's action was highlighted by senior DeAnne Davis winning the women's triple jump with an NCAA automatic qualifying leap of 44-6. The mark increases her personal best and second best mark in Carolina history from 43-9 1/4, which she made on January 21st at the Virginia Tech Pepsi Invitational. UNC's Ola Sesay finished fourth in the competition with an NCAA provisional mark of 42-2. Davis also took the 60m hurdles in an NCAA provisional time of 8.37 and was joined by teammate Lutisha Shittu, who finished third for All-ACC honors in 8.41, also an NCAA provisional time.
In the 3000m, Trish Nervo won the championship in the 3000m hurdles in a time of 9:30.65 for her second NCAA provisional qualifying time of the year, her previous mark was 9:31.37 on February 5th. Heather Tanner joined Nervo in the top ten of the event, finishing sixth in a time of 9:53.08.
Senior Julie Smith placed second in the mile in a time of 4:52.69, to take home All-ACC honors. In the 200m, Janelle Billingslea won All-ACC honors by finishing third in 24.42 and Ola Sesay took fifth in 24.54. And in the 20-pound weight throw, Carolina had three top ten finishers in Jill Pedretti, who finished fourth (53-9), Nikki Reader, who finished seventh (50-0 3/4) and Ibiene Bilaye-Benibo, who finished ninth (47-9 1/4).
In other women's events, Edi Ntuen finished fifth in 400m in 54.98, Shittu finished seventh in the 60m in 7.71, and freshman Bobbie Jo Munson came in fifth in the 800m in 2:12.31. Finally, the 4x400m relay team (Ntuen, Wright, Munson and Billingslea) took second in 3:48.16.
On the men's side, sophomore Brent Callaway won the pole vault championship with a mark of 16-9 1/2 and teammate Galen Foresman followed in sixth with a vault of 15-9 3/4.
In the first competition of the day, the men's 35-pound weight throw, Sal Gigante placed second and earned All-ACC honors with a throw of 61-0 3/4 and freshman Chris Glenn scored with a sixth place finish, tossing 51-7. In the 800m, junior Jeff Ellis earned All-ACC honors with a second place finish in 1:52.33 and sophomore Zach Victor finished sixth in 1:53.45.
In other action, Jonathan Dean finished tied for fifth in the high jump with a jump of 6-8, Jacobe Foster finished sixth in the 400m in 47.82, Kevin Crittendon was fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 49-2 1/2, Marcus O'Neal came in seventh in the 60m in 6.91 and the 200m in 21.86, and Joseph Handy took sixth in the 200m in 21.71.
