University of North Carolina head football coach Carl Torbush has named Gunter Brewer as the Tar Heels' new wide receivers coach. Darrell Moody, Carolina's wide receivers coach the past two seasons, will coach running backs, a position he previously held from 1990-95 with the Tar Heels.
Torbush will announce a defensive coordinator at a Thursday morning press conference. Torbush has been the team's defensive coordinator for the past 12 seasons. The press conference is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. on the fourth floor of the Frank H. Kenan Football Center.
Brewer joins Carolina after coaching at Marshall since 1996, where he coached 1997 Biletnikoff Award winner Randy Moss, who has gone on to become an NFL All-Pro for the Minnesota Vikings. Last year the Thundering Herd completed a perfect 13-0 season to earn a No. 10 final national ranking. His responsibilities at Marshall have included: coaching the running backs and serving as recruiting coordinator, 1996, wide receivers and recruiting coordinator, 1997, associate offensive coordinator and wide receivers, 1998, special teams coordinator and wide receivers, 1999.
"We are very pleased to hire a man with the experience Gunter brings to our staff," Torbush said. "He has had tremendous success as a wide receivers coach. He comes from a wide-open offensive scheme that Marshall has run for several years. Gunter is not only an excellent on-field coach, but he is also a great recruiter. He worked hard to coordinate the recruiting efforts at Marshall that helped build them into a Top 10 program. He will be a great asset to the University, community and our football program."
Brewer, 35, was a two-year letterwinner at wide receiver at Wake Forest, where he earned his degree in science and health sports in 1987. In 1989, he was awarded a master's in education with a specialization in exercise physiology from Mississippi.
Brewer's previous coaching stops include: wide receivers/strength and flexibility at Wake Forest, 1986-87, running backs at Mississippi, 1988-89, offensive coordinator for the Angles Bleus (Paris, France) of the European Football League, 1989, graduate assistant/administrative aid at Mississippi, 1989-90, running backs and recruiting coordinator at East Tennessee State, 1990-92, wide receivers and recruiting coordinator at ETSU, 1992-95, head coach at Northeast Community College in Booneville, Miss., 1995.
In addition to coaching Moss, one of the top wide receivers in the 1990s, he also coached all-conference wideouts L.V. Colclough, Nate Poole and James Williams. Williams led the country in kickoff returns last year.
"I am looking forward to working with a great bunch of people at North Carolina," Brewer said. "I think I can bring something to the table in terms of being around a great program at Marshall the last four years where we won 50 of 54 games. I am looking forward to the opportunity to work with Coach Torbush and Coach (Mike) O'Cain. I've known Coach Torbush since I was about eight years old so this is a special situation."
Brewer is married to the former Rhonda Blount of Memphis, Tenn. The couple has two children, Keaton (11) and Lauren (8). Brewer's father, Billy, was head coach at Ole Miss from 1983-94.
Moody also coached running backs at Southern Mississippi (1975), NC State (1977-79) and LSU (1980-83). He has coached some of the finest running backs in those schools' respective histories, including Garry James and Dalton Hilliard at LSU, Ted Brown and Billy Ray Vickers at NC State, and Natrone Means, Leon Johnson and Curtis Johnson at Carolina.
