Carolina freshman guard Joseph Forte was named the 1999-2000 Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year in voting by the Atlantic Coast Sportswriters Association compiled by the Associated Press.
Forte, from Greenbelt, Md., received 48 of 103 first place votes. Duke point guard Jason Williams was second with 43 first place ballots.
Forte leads the Tar Heels in scoring at 16.3 points per game, just shy of Phil Ford's UNC freshman record of 16.4 points per contest average. Forte also tops the Tar Heels in three-point baskets (47) and steals (49). He is second on the team with 86 assists and third in rebounding (5.4).
Forte is the fifth Tar Heel to win ACC Rookie-of-the-Year honors since the award was first presented in 1976. Forte joins Sam Perkins (1981), Michael Jordan (1982), J.R. Reid (1987) and Ed Cota (1997) as Tar Heel recipients.
