Chapel Hill, N.C. -- North Carolina Gymnastics Head Coach Derek Galvin was voted the 2000 East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Coach of the Year by his peers on Saturday as he watched his team wrap up their season by placing seventh at the EAGL Championships held at the University of Pittsburgh. Junior standout Brooke Wilson also earned honors this weekend as she was named the league's Co-Gymnast of the Year along with junior Gabi Weller (Heuhlheim, Germany) of Towson University.
Leading the way for North Carolina at the championships was Wilson who placed second on the floor with a 9.950 score and tied for third on vault with a 9.825 en route to finishing in seventh place for the all-around competition.
Wilson's constant dominance during the 2000 season proved her worthy of earning the EAGL honor. This season the junior from Sumter, S.C. broke three North Carolina records on floor, bars, and the all-around as well as being named EAGL Gymnast of the Week on January 18th after claiming first place on all four events including the all-around against Radford. Wilson also swept first place on all events during the Tar Heels' victory against William & Mary on February 24th in Chapel Hill.
The Tar Heels finished the meet with a team total score of 194.475 which ranks as the school's fourth highest team output ever. 19th-Ranked N.C. State claimed their second-straight EAGL crown with a score of 196.000 followed closely in second place by host-team Pittsburgh (195.275) and third-place finishing Maryland (195.050).
The Tar Heels earned the highest combined team score on the balance beam with a 48.825 as senior Erica Roberts tied for first place with a personal career-high tying mark of 9.850. Sophomore Lisa Companioni and freshman Natalie Halbach tied for seventh in the event with marks of 9.775.
