CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – University of North Carolina gymnastics will head to the Baton Rouge Regional April 1-5 as announced on the NCAA Selection Show Monday afternoon. Their regional appearance marks the second straight for the Tar Heels as a team. Carolina will compete in the second round of regionals in Thursday's afternoon session at 1 p.m. CT with streaming available on ESPN+.
The Baton Rouge Regional features no. 2 LSU, no. 7 Stanford, no. 15 Clemson, UNC, Utah State, Auburn, Air Force, and Nebraska.
The championship is composed of a field of 36 teams based on their national qualifying score. The NCAA Women's Gymnastics Committee seeds teams 1-16, and the remaining teams are placed geographically at one of the four regional sites.
Four regionals, consisting of nine teams, three all-around competitors (not on a qualifying team), and four individual specialists per event (not on a qualifying team), will be competing at predetermined campus sites. The first round will consist of two teams, and the second round will feature eight teams while the regional final will consist of four teams.
Last season, the Tar Heels competed at the Tuscaloosa Regional where they finished sixth in the final session. Kaya Forbes became the first gymnast at UNC since 2018 to qualify for the NCAA Championships where she competed on vault.
Carolina heads into regionals off a fifth-place finish at the ACC Championship. Gwen Fink and JoJo Valahovic have continued to lead the team in post season after landing All-ACC Championship Team honors.
