HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The 11th-ranked University of North Carolina men's lacrosse team lost to 14th-ranked Hofstra, 20-12, Saturday afternoon at Hofstra Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y. Coach Dave Klarman's Tar Heels (7-6) took a 7-6 lead into the half but couldn't contain the Flying Dutchmen (9-4) in the third and fourth quarters as they were outscored 14-5 over the last two periods.
Junior Jeff Sonke got the Tar Heels on the board just 1:39 into the game with an unassisted goal. Freshman Steven Will and sophomore Tim Gosier also scored for Carolina in the first period to offset Hofstra's three goals in the period and carry a tie game into the second quarter.
Hofstra's Doug Shanahan needed only nine seconds to put the Flying Dutchmen ahead in the second stanza. A goal by Ramar Clash put Hofstra ahead 5-3 before the Tar Heels could answer with three consecutive unassisted goals by senior Chase Martin, junior Mac Hammer and senior Matt Crofton to put the Tar Heels up 6-5. Hofstra's Tom Kessler tied the match at 10:42, but UNC junior Andy Jonas scored with 3:21 left in the period to give Carolina a 7-6 halftime advantage.
Hofstra scored the first seven goals of the third period before a Kyle ell goal with 16 seconds left in the quarter broke Carolina's scoring drought with Hofstra ahead 13-8. The Flying Dutchmen were led in the third quarter by Bob Parrinelli and Joe Kostolansky with two goals each. Hofstra has now outscored opponents 51-24 in the third period this season.
Sonke led a Tar Heel run in the fourth, scoring two goals 17 seconds apart to pull Carolina within four at 14-10. But four Hofstra goals over the next 5:04, two by Kostolansky to give him four on the day, put the Tar Heels in a 18-10 hole with 7:18 remaining in the contest. Goals by UNC's Joel Miller and Chase Martin pulled the Tar Heels to within six but two Hofstra goals in the last 2:10 gave the Flying Dutchmen a 20-12 victory.
Sonke, a 2000 All-Atlantic Coast Conference attackman, led the Tar Heels with 3 goals and two assists, while Martin finished the contest with two goals and one assist. Sophomore goalie Kris Blindenbacher had 15 saves between the pipes for UNC.
Hofstra's Kostolansky had one assist to go along with his four goals on the day. Scott Dooley and Kessler each had three goals and two assists, and Clash added three goals and one assist for the Flying Dutchmen. Hofstra goalie Michael Demeo had 17 saves for the game.
The Tar Heels wrap up the regular season on Thursday, May 4, at 2:00 p.m. against Lehigh at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill.
