University of North Carolina Director of Athletics Dick Baddour comments on Bill Guthridge's retirement:
"It was my expectation and hope that coach Bill Guthridge would continue in the head coaching position for some time to come. He has made the decision to step down as the head coach and I respect that decision.
"It is an honor to work with him. Bill is the ideal coach and teacher. He has tremendous dedication to the basketball program and to the University. He understands the values of the institution and applies those values in the leadership of the basketball program. He places the welfare of the University, the basketball program and the student-athletes at the highest level. His commitment to academic achievement is reflected in the achievements of his players.
"For the last three years, and before that for 30 years, Bill Guthridge has paid a great service to this institution and the basketball program. He followed a legend and he did it with grace, dignity and with athletic and academic success. The University will forever be grateful for his leadership."
