Doug Wojcik, an assistant coach last year under Matt Doherty at the University of Notre Dame, begins his first year as an assistant at North Carolina. Wojcik had been an assistant the previous nine years at the Naval Academy.
A former basketball player and team captain at Navy, Wojcik coordinated recruiting for Navy in addition to working with the Mids' perimeter and post players. Hassan Booker, a two-time all-conference selection who won the 1998 Chip Hilton Award presented by the Basketball Hall of Fame to a player who demonstrates personal character both on and off the court, was among the players at Navy who Wojcik tutored.
A 1987 graduate of the Naval Academy, Wojcik served as captain for the Middies as a senior in 1986-87. He helped Navy participate in the NCAA Tournament three straight years, including a 1986 East Regional final appearance against eventual Final Four runner-up Duke. He then served as an assistant coach on Navy teams that played in the NCAA Tournament in 1994, 1997 and 1998. He has played a part in every conference title won by Navy and in six of the 11 NCAA bids received in Academy history.
A native of Wheeling, W.Va., native still holds Navy records for most assists in a game (14), season (251) and career (714), setting single-season mark as a junior. He started every game at point guard for three seasons, helping Navy to a 26-6 record as a sophomore followed by marks of 30-5 and 26-6 his final two seasons. Teammate David Robinson turned over his 1986 Colonial Athletic Association MVP award to Wojcik, citing his unselfish play and leadership qualities.
Wojcik previously attended the Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, R.I., where he served as captain of the 1983 squad.
After graduating from Navy, Wojcik served as a temporary duty ensign in the basketball office before attending Surface Warfare Officer School in Newport, R.I. He was assigned to the USS W.S. Sims out of Jacksonville, Fla. where he served as first lieutenant and boilers officer for two years.
His brother David is an assistant basketball coach at Loyola College under his high school assistant coach Dino Gaudio. Doug's high school head coach was current Xavier head coach Skip Prosser.
Born April 12, 1964, Wojcik is married to the former Lael House, a 1990 Naval Academy graduate who earned letters in basketball and track.
Fred Quartlebaum, an assistant coach to Matt Doherty at Notre Dame in 1999-2000 and an assistant coach at Fairfield University in 1998-99, has been named an assistant on Doherty's staff at Carolina.
Prior to working with Doherty at Notre Dame for the 1999-2000 season, Quartlebaum spent the 1998-99 season with the Stags, spent the 1997-98 season at Holy Cross and coached Towson State in 1996-97. Quartlebaum previously served four seasons (1992-96) as an assistant coach at Navy as he helped the Midshipmen earn the Patriot League championship in 1994 and a trip to the NCAA tournament. Quartlebaum also was the head coach of the junior varsity program at Navy. He worked alongside newly named Carolina assistant Doug Wojick at Notre Dame and in all four years at Navy.
Quartlebaum spent the 1991-92 season as the head coach at Rye High School in Rye, N.Y.
A 1989 Fordham graduate with a degree in communications, Quartlebaum was a four-year performer in basketball for the Rams, helping lead the team to a National Invitation Tournament appearance in 1988. He was a team co-captain his senior year.
A White Plains, N.Y., native, Quartlebaum graduated from Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, and earned all-county and all-division honors in basketball, as welll as being chosen one of the top eight high school players in New York City as a senior.
Born Aug. 30, 1967, Quartlebaum is married to the former Christy Stephens.
Bob MacKinnon , an assistant coach to Matt Doherty at Notre Dame and, has been named an assistant on Doherty's staff at Carolina.
Prior to spending the 1999-2000 season at Notre Dame, MacKinnon was the head men's basketball coach at the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Port, N.Y. for two seasons (1997-99). MacKinnon led the Mariners to appearances in the NCAA Division III tournament in both of his years in charge of the program. MacKinnon had a two-year record of 38-16 (.703) at the school.
In 1997-98, the Mariners went 16-11 and posted an 11-3 mark in the Skyline Conference, winning both the regular-season championship and the post-season tournament. In 1998-99, the Academy finished with a 22-5 record, won 16 of its final 17 games and had a perfect 14-0 mark in conference play to win the regular season championship and post-season tournament. MacKinnon was named the Skyline Conference coach of the year following the 1998-99 season.
MacKinnon came to the Merchant Marine Academy after serving on the staff at Niagara for seven seasons from 1990-96. MacKinnon was an assistant coach for the Purple Eagles for six years and was the associate head coach in his final three years there.
MacKinnon also served as an assistant coach at George Washington (1985-90), Mercyhurst (1982-85) and King's (Pa.) College (1981-82)
He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from King's College in 1982 and his Master's in Education from Niagara in 1987. He was a four-year member of the basketball team at King's.
A native of Buffalo, N.Y., MacKinnon's father, Bob MacKinnon, Sr., was a member of the new Jersey nets organization from 1979-95, serving as an assistant coach, head coach for part of the 1987-88 season and general manager.
Born Sept. 24, 1960, MacKinnon and his wife Suzanne have two sons ' Bobby and Matthew.
David Cason joins the North Carolina basketball program after one season as director of basketball operations at Notre Dame under Matt Doherty. Prior to joining the Fighting Irish, he served for three seasons as an assistant coach at Eastern Illinois University.
Cason is a 1996 graduate of Illinois State and played for the Redbirds from 1993-95. In his senior season, Cason served as team captain and helped lead Illinois State to a 20-13 record and a second-round appearance in the NIT. He played his first two years of college basketball (1991-93) at Southern Idaho.
A native of Baltimore, Md., and a graduate of Southern High School, Cason was born on August 12, 1972.
