University of North Carolina senior center Brendan Haywood, junior forward Jason Capel and sophomore guard Joseph Forte were named preseason candidates for the 2001 John R. Wooden Award given to the National Collegiate Basketball Player of the Year.
The Los Angeles Athletic Club released its list of 50 players on the preseason list on Friday. The award will be announced on April 6, 2001.
Carolina is the only school to have three players win the Wooden Award. UNC players Phil Ford (1978), Michael Jordan (1984 and Antawn Jamison (1998) have been previous Wooden Award recipients.
Haywood scored 20 points and had 12 rebounds in the 2000 national semifinals and led the Tar Heels in rebounding last year with 7.5 boards per game. He set an Atlantic Coast Conference record with a field goal percentage of .697 and averaged 13.6 points per contest.
Capel was second in the ACC in free throw percentage at .829, second on UNC in scoring at 12.3 points per game and was third in rebounding at 6.8 per game.
Forte earned ACC Rookie-of-the-Year and second-team All-ACC honors last year after he led UNC with 16.7 points per game. He was named MVP of the NCAA South Regional after scoring 28 points in the regional championship game win over Tulsa that propelled the Tar Heels into the Final Four.
