CHAPEL HILL --- "North Carolina" is back on the University of North Carolina men's basketball game jerseys, Director of Athletics Dick Baddour announced today.
The Tar Heels played last season, including the Final Four, in uniforms that featured the interlocking "NC" logo on the front of the jerseys in place of the words "North Carolina," which had previously been on the uniforms.
"I know a great number of our fans will be pleased that the uniforms will once again say `North Carolina,' " says Baddour. "This issue clearly shows the passion Carolina basketball fans have for this program. Coach (Bill) Guthridge and I decided at the end of last season to go back to the previous design and Coach (Matt) Doherty has concurred with that decision.
"Coach Guthridge and I agreed that `North Carolina' held a special bond with our fans."
"I was surprised that people got as emotional as they did when we made the change, because we have modified our uniforms before," says Guthridge. "I've said repeatedly that it illustrates how much interest there is in Carolina basketball. We went with the `NC' because nothing was more traditional than that logo which the University has used since the early part of the century. Some of our alumni, students and fans wanted us to go back to `North Carolina,' so we put it back on the uniforms.
"The most important thing to me is Brendan Haywood and most of the other players who worked hard to get us to the Final Four last year are returning, but I know this will generate a lot of excitement with our fans. I know I'm looking forward to watching them play this year, no matter the style of uniform."
"Dick Baddour and Coach Guthridge told me when I started that they had decided to put `North Carolina' back on the jerseys," says head coach Matt Doherty. "I told them we won three national championships with `North Carolina' on the uniforms so that was fine by me."
One design addition to the Nike-manufactured uniform top is a thicker, blue band behind the white argyle pattern along the sides. That matches the white band behind the blue argyle pattern which was on the away uniform jerseys last season. The blue in the uniform has been streamlined from three shades to two, using primarily Carolina Blue with navy and white piping.
The uniforms will be made of Nike's DRI FIT Flatback fabric. That is Nike's best fabric in providing athletes with a cool, dry uniform and is made of cotton, rather than mesh which is scratchy and heavier.
The interlocking `NC' has been placed on both sides of the game shorts below the argyle screenprint.
