CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ------ Senior safety Quinton Savage, who fractured a kidney last year vs. Wake Forest, will take a medical hardship this season and will no longer play football, Head Coach Carl Torbush announced on Thursday. In addition, redshirt freshman linebacker Ian Alexander has chosen to give up football for personal reasons.
Savage, a native of Denver, will remain on scholarship for the 2000 season and is still enrolled at North Carolina.
Last year in the ninth game of the season against the Demon Deacons (Nov. 6), Savage was hit as he crossed the field and immediately went down. Later diagnosed as a fractured kidney, Savage missed the final two games of the 1999 campaign vs. NC State and Duke.
Savage completes his Carolina career with 101 tackles and six pass break ups. His most successful season was in 1999 when he started six games and tallied 48 solo tackles and 23 assists. He blocked three punts at UNC, including one in the 1998 Las Vegas Bowl and one in the 1998 Gator Bowl that was returned for a touchdown.
